Hugh Cornwell Diary

March 2004

Just a few notes to keep you all up to date with what's been happening..... Finally placed the idea of writing a comprehensive autobiography with Harper Collins. I've been thinking of doing this ever since the Song by Song book came out. Harper Collins have put me with Martin Roach to act as my editor in chief (Martin Roach bio). He's a very experienced music writer and in the past year alone he has completed books on The White Stripes, The Strokes and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I'm thinking of calling it A Multitude Of Sins and it is due to come out in October 2004.

We're in the process of setting up a band tour in October to support the release of the new album, which I recently completed in NYC with Tony. I went back in January to do a week's work with him and it all went well. The tentative title is Beyond Elysian Fields and the track listing will be:

Land Of A Thousand Kisses / Cadiz / Do Right Bayou / Under Her Spell / Beauty On The Beach /
The Story Of Harry Power / 24/7 / Mr.Big / Picked Up By The Wind / I Don't Mind / Henry Moore

This coming week we are due to master the album. I was also invited to Hanover to work on a track for Mousse T's new album. The track is called Underground and I contributed vocals and some guitars. He was a real gent and I enjoyed hanging out with him.

I'm pretty confident that this summer will see me return to the European festival circuit, thanks to the support of Neil O'Brien at The Agency. I hope to be able to give some more news very soon, as some other interesting projects are under way.... All the best, must get back to the book now..... Hugh Cornwell March 2004

AUTUMN 2003 - US ALBUM SESSIONS DIARY

Hugh wrote an on-line diary whilst recording his new studio album, Beyond Elysian Fields in the US during late September / October of 2003. The diary providese a fascinating insight into the evolution of the album.

2000

It’s been a busy 6 months for me – it began last November with a month long trip to the East Coast of America. I did about 25 acoustic shows in the month (to coincide with the release of Wired in the States by Koch as First Bus To Babylon), and then returned to start laying down backing tracks for Hi Fi with Laurie (Latham), with Justin on drums and Michelle on bass. We managed to commit 10 to tape and since then Laurie and I have been overdubbing with Mikes assistance. Seven tracks are mixed and ready and we are all very pleased with the results.
Earliest release date looks like being worldwide sometime in July 2000, so with any luck I’ll be able to perform in the latter half of the Summer at a festival or two...... Hugh Cornwell 9th May 2000

1999

I thought it was about time to post something on the net since returning from the first US trip this year. It was very refreshing being back in the States after so long, especially appearing there as a solo artist for the first time ever. I was intending to tour Wolf there in '88, but was dropped from Virgin before it could happen. I was surprised at how many copies of Wolf appeared there! And the distances people had travelled to the gigs: Peru to New York, Boston to Baltimore, Tulsa to Dallas, to mention a few. We were delighted with the response to the tour and at how well Velvel treated us, I think it could be a truly fine label.

I'm planning to go back to tour the North East / Canada starting in Quebec and finishing in Boston. I'll be alone again, but the band will follow! David and I have just returned from Norway, playing at a festival in Bergen, which was neat. I've just started the May UK dates, and I'm going to work a few more numbers into the set, so I better go and do some rehearsing...... Hugh Cornwell 7th May 1999
